       WATER FILTER FOR WALPOLE, MASSACHUSETTS

There are many types and sizes of filters available to address the various types of potential water quality issues experienced in Walpole town water or private wells. There are cartridge style water filters and whole house water filters which will be reviewed in the balance of this write-up.  Matching the right technology and sizing the system to meet the water usage demands of your home are critical to selecting the best approach for your situation.  Additionally, a professionally plumbed system is paramount as well as maintenance of the system throughout the years to optimize the useful life and proper functioning of your new water filtration equipment.

CARTRIDGE STYLE WATER FILTER

  WATER FILTER CARTRIDGE CHOICES

There are various types and sizes of water filter cartridges with differentiating features relating to what you are trying to mechanically remove from the water.  These filters do not work on removing dissolved impurities from the water as other technologies must be used for this purpose.

SEDIMENT WATER FILTER CARTRIDGE , as their name implies, are for removing sediment (particulate matter) from the water supply. The key characteristics relate to the micron rating of the filter designed to remove particles at or greater than a specified size and also capacity in terms of how long the sediment filter will work before it is no longer able to remove sediment. Specifying a micron rating that is too small for installation at the water’s point of entry into your home, for example, may cause an unacceptable drop in water pressure.  Specifying a micron rating that is not small enough may produce less than optimal results in keeping sediment out of your water supply.  Sometimes trial and error becomes the route to determining what works best in your situation. Experienced water treatment professionals have the benefit of many years of trial and error and will usually know what will work best in different situations.

SEDIMENT FILTERS ARE IMPORTANT because sediment can be abrasive to all of your water using appliances and can also negatively affect other types of water filtration or water softening equipment that you may have installed or are planning to install in your home or other facility. Removing sediment is also a good step in providing better drinking water, although not the only step if a higher level of purity is desired.  (For more on high quality drinking water, see the link at http://h2ocare.com/reverse-osmosis-ro-water-purification/.

CARBON WATER FILTER CARTRIDGESuse activated carbon to remove chemicals (such as chlorine, volatile organics and others) and some bad tastes and odors from water.  Carbon filters are also components of reverse osmosis purification systems to remove chlorine from water prior to flowing to the systems’ membrane which can be negatively affected by the chlorine. Water passes through activated carbon, which is porous, trapping certain particles that are attracted to the porous material in a process known as adsorption.  At some point, adsorption capacity is exceeded and the filter must be changed in order to be effective.  As with sediment water filters, the micron rating and size of the filter must be matched to the specific situation.

There are also other types of water filter cartridges for very specific purposes such as pH neutralizing, pipe protection and others.  These may be introduced to you by your water treatment professional if your particular situation warrants them.

WHOLE HOUSE WATER SOFTENING SYSTEMS

A water softener is a type of whole house water filtration system that is designed for removing hard water minerals (magnesium & calcium) as well as dissolved iron and manganese from the water.  For water with high levels of iron or manganese (“the stainers”), an “up-flow” water softener is recommended to prevent mineral build-up in the bottom of the water softener.  Also, high efficiency water softeners that are more efficient with both water and salt usage are preferred.

POINT OF ENTRY, WHOLE HOUSE CARBON OR SEDIMENT FILTERS

BACKWASHABLE CARBON OR SEDIMENT FILTER SYSTEM

In situations where there is high water usage and the use of cartridge filters doesn’t make sense, a point of entry system may be the solution.  These systems do not require the frequency of change-outs that cartridge filters do and have the ability to automatically clean themselves, extending the life of the media inside the tank.  Another example would be if your town supplied water is high in chlorine and you wish to eliminate it from your water supply, a point of entry carbon water filter will have enough capacity to last much longer and also remove more of the chlorine due to longer “contact time” that the water has with the filter.

WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEMS

Water purification is the process of removing undesirable chemicals, biological contaminants, and suspended solids and gases from water with the goal of producing water fit for a specific purpose. Most drinking water goes through a disinfection process, but water purification may also be designed for other purposes, including fulfilling the requirements of pharmacological, medical, chemical and industrial applications, or just to upgrade the drinking water supply. The methods used include physical processes such as sediment filtration, carbon based filtration, sedimentation with sand filters; chemical processes such as flocculation and chlorination and the use of ultraviolet light or ozone.

On an individualized basis, water purification systems can be installed for the removal of almost any of the potential water quality concerns you may have. For example, lead is typically removed from drinking water with either a reverse osmosis water purification system or a carbon filter designed specifically for the removal of lead from water. Water softeners are typically installed to remove dissolved iron or manganese and hardness minerals in the water through a technology called Ion Exchange (see hard water affects section below for more detailed information on this).  A water softener will also remove dissolved lead from the water as well, however they are usually installed ahead of the piping where the potential for lead leaching is most likely to occur and is not recommended for this purpose. To remove particulate iron or manganese, a properly sized sediment filter is required.  Radon or arsenic in the water requires other technologies and systems. Water testing will lead to the right system design & installation.

THE AFFECTS OF HARD WATER IN YOUR HOME

Water purification for York, ME

The only way to know how hard your water is by having it tested.  There are on-site testing methods that are reliable or you can have a sample taken to a certified laboratory. If you have a private well, there can be a very different hardness level than even the house across the street with a private well.  Hard water interferes with many cleaning tasks, from doing the laundry to washing dishes to taking a shower. Washing your hair in hard water may leave it feeling sticky and dull.  Dishes and glasses get spotted or streaky and a film may build up on shower doors, bathtubs, sinks and faucets. Clothes can look dingy and feel rough and scratchy. Magnesium and Calcium may have major affects on your home’s plumbing and your ability to clean, even though the EPA has no published limits on these.  Scale from hard water can build-up inside water heaters insulating the temperature sensor inside the tank creating extra work to bring the temperature up to the set level. This reduces the life of your hot water heater and will likely require early replacement. Hard water can also cause scale build-up in pipes that can lower water pressure throughout the home (see photo below).

The primary hard water minerals are calcium and magnesium (the hardness minerals), while iron and manganese (“The Stainers”) can also be found in water, mostly in private wells.  Depending on whether the contaminant’s form is in solution or particulate, these contaminants can be removed with a water softener and/or a properly specified sediment water filtration installation.

A water softener will improve your water greatly if you have hard water minerals, iron, or manganese in your water.   If other impurities are confirmed in the water test, they can be removed with other types of water filtration systems. The maximum allowable level (per the Environmental Protection Agency) for iron as a secondary contaminant is .3 parts per million and for manganese is .05 parts per million. Small amounts of these minerals can have very noticeable, even damaging affects on your home’s water quality. Water softeners vary, including up-flow versus down-flow which can make a big difference, particularly if there are elevated levels of iron or manganese in the water.  In some cases where the water chemistry is more complicated, a different type of water filtration system may make more sense to remove iron or manganese.

                   WATER TEST OPTIONS

Water test analysis for certain items can be performed on-site with industry standard test kits and get reliable readings right at your home. Based on the results, a determination can be made whether or not a water filtration or water softening system is necessary to remove the unwanted minerals or contaminants. If so, options can be reviewed for selecting the preferred approach. The on-site testing can be performed for the following:

Hardness > pH > Iron > Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) > Alkalinity > Chlorine

For a more complete water test and analysis, we recommend pulling proper water samples for testing at a certified laboratory.  In all cases, it is paramount that water testing be performed in order to determine whether or not a water filtration system or water softening system is necessary.

For health related contaminants such as Arsenic, Radon, Lead, Bacteria, Nitrates, Trihalomethanes, Haloacetic acids or for more comprehensive testing, we can assist you by properly pulling water samples of the right amounts, including complying with required maximum holding periods, temperature, and other protocol.   From there, we can bring the samples to a certified lab for testing, which requires specialized analytical equipment and procedures.

We have Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3 testing levels (see link just below) or we can customize testing to your needs depending on your specific situation and reason for having your water tested. We can assist you in determining which water test to have done.  The contaminants tested for under each of the three Groups are identified in detail at the following link Water-Testing-Sheet-.  Water testing from a private well will require more extensive testing than water coming from a municipal supply which has already undergone a certain level of testing. If you are selling your home with a private well, your town’s Board of Health, the buyer’s home inspector or bank may dictate what must be tested for. We will assist you in determining which Group testing is right for you. Once the lab results become available, we can analyze the report, review it with you and determine if any action is required. If a water filtration system or water softener system is required, we can review your options and determine the most effective approach for you.

   WHOLE HOUSE WATER FILTRATION SYSTEMS

Whole house water filtration systems are very effective in addressing potential water quality issues experienced in Rockland, Massachusetts town water or well water. Not only is matching the right technology important, sizing the system to meet the water usage demands of your home is also key. Lastly, a professionally plumbed system is also critical as well as maintenance of the system throughout the years to optimize the useful life and proper functioning of your new equipment.

While symptoms of water quality issues such as bad odors & taste, staining of laundry, bathroom fixtures, etc. are indicators of problems, the preferred starting point is to get a water test to identify the minerals or contaminants in the water and at what quantity they exist.  This will lead to an effective system recommendation and route to providing your home with excellent water quality. While certain minerals & contaminants can be tested on-site (iron, hardness, pH, total dissolved solids), health threat items like radon in water, arsenic in water, nitrates and others should be properly sampled and brought to a certified laboratory for testing that requires specialized equipment.

There are various types of bad odors and tastes that you may experience in your water. Hydrogen Sulfide is not uncommon and is evidenced typically by a rotten egg smell in your water, however this may also be caused by high Manganese levels as well.  A water filtration specifically for this problem is effective in correcting this. For a more complete description of this and other potential bad odors and taste in your water, see the link at http://h2ocare.com/bad-odor-taste-water/.

You may notice odor and taste issues if your home is supplied by town water, typically associated with Chlorine. Chlorine is used for disinfection purposes by the town to control microorganisms including bacteria and others that may be present in the water distribution system.  Carbon water filtration systems are effective at removing chlorine and the associated taste and odors that come with it.  These systems can either be installed at the point of entry in your home, typically in the basement, or at a point of use for drinking water only.
