  CARTRIDGE WATER FILTER CHOICES

There are various types and sizes of water filter cartridges with differentiating features relating to what you are trying to mechanically remove from the water.  These filters do not work on removing dissolved impurities from the water as other technologies must be used for this purpose.

SEDIMENT WATER FILTER CARTRIDGE , as their name implies, are for removing sediment (particulate matter) from the water supply. The key characteristics relate to the micron rating of the filter designed to remove particles at or greater than a specified size and also capacity in terms of how long the sediment filter will work before it is no longer able to remove sediment. Specifying a micron rating that is too small for installation at the water’s point of entry into your home, for example, may cause an unacceptable drop in water pressure.  Specifying a micron rating that is not small enough may produce less than optimal results in keeping sediment out of your water supply.  Sometimes trial and error becomes the route to determining what works best in your situation. Experienced water treatment professionals have the benefit of many years of trial and error and will usually know what will work best in different situations.

SEDIMENT FILTERS ARE IMPORTANT because sediment can be abrasive to all of your water using appliances and can also negatively affect other types of water filtration or water softening equipment that you may have installed or are planning to install in your home or other facility. Removing sediment is also a good step in providing better drinking water, although not the only step if a higher level of purity is desired.  (For more on high quality drinking water, see the link at http://h2ocare.com/reverse-osmosis-ro-water-purification/.

CARBON WATER FILTER CARTRIDGE   use activated carbon to remove chemicals (such as chlorine, volatile organics and others) and some bad tastes and odors from water.  Carbon filters are also components of reverse osmosis purification systems to remove chlorine from water prior to flowing to the systems’ membrane which can be negatively affected by the chlorine. Water passes through activated carbon, which is porous, trapping certain particles that are attracted to the porous material in a process known as adsorption.  At some point, adsorption capacity is exceeded and the filter must be changed in order to be effective.  As with sediment water filters, the micron rating and size of the filter must be matched to the specific situation.

There are also other types of water filter cartridges for very specific purposes such as pH neutralizing, pipe protection and others.  These may be introduced to you by your water treatment professional if your particular situation warrants them.

WATER SOFTENERS

WHOLE HOUSE WATER SOFTENING SYSTEMS

A water softener is a type of whole house water filtration system that is designed for removing hard water minerals (magnesium & calcium) as well as dissolved iron and manganese from the water.  For water with high levels of iron or manganese (“the stainers”), an “up-flow” water softener is recommended to prevent mineral build-up in the bottom of the water softener.  Also, high efficiency water softeners that are more efficient with both water and salt usage are preferred.

POINT OF ENTRY, WHOLE HOUSE CARBON OR SEDIMENT FILTERS

water filter Ogunquit, ME

BACKWASHABLE CARBON OR SEDIMENT FILTER SYSTEM

In situations where there is high water usage and the use of cartridge filters doesn’t make sense, a point of entry system may be the solution.  These systems do not require the frequency of change-outs that cartridge filters do and have the ability to automatically clean themselves, extending the life of the media inside the tank.  Another example would be if your town supplied water is high in chlorine and you wish to eliminate it from your water supply, a point of entry carbon water filter will have enough capacity to last much longer and also remove more of the chlorine due to longer “contact time” that the water has with the filter.

WHOLE HOUSE WATER FILTER FOR TWO COMMON REGIONAL HEALTH THREATS IN PRIVATE WELLS

Other contaminants found in New England well water include Radon and Arsenic.  A water softener will not remove these health threat contaminants. Radon in water is safely removed with an aeration system that agitates the incoming well water, releasing the gas from the water in a sealed chamber. This gas is then safely vented to the outside ambient air.

WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM OPTIONS

Needham residents may require a water softener or some other type of water filtration system to improve water quality.  As is the case with many wells in Massachusetts, there are certain common contaminants that find their way into the water supply.  Later in this write-up, specific contaminants that are commonly found in Needham private wells are identified and effective remediation methods are covered.  There are tried and true water filtration and water softener systems and methods to remove these contaminants and provide you with excellent water quality.

START WITH WATER TESTING

Water testing before water filtration in nEEDHAM, MA

Prior to even considering a water filtration or water softener system, water testing should be conducted and should include analysis for, at least the parameters in the table below.  If you are uncertain as to how to take a proper sample and get it to a lab or what to test for, you should contact a lab or water treatment professional for assistance.  For more on water testing, see the link at http://h2ocare.com/water-testing/.  Some of the typical items tested for are as follows:

Coliform bacteria pH
Arsenic Radon
Chloride Sodium
Iron Sulfate
Lead Conductivity
Manganese Nitrogen-Nitrate
Volatile Organic Compounds Total Dissolved Solids

In addition to the above, testing for Volatile Organic Compounds including Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) may be important, depending on the historical land use near your home.  In the past, this substance was used as a fuel additive in gasoline to reduce airborne emissions.  Unfortunately and unintentionally, in some cases, it seeped into the ground from fuel tank leaks contaminating certain wells.  This has happened all around the country, however testing and remediation has proven effective.

IRON, MANGANESE, LOW pH, ARSENIC & RADON

Some common issues encountered in Upton, MA private wells are manganese and iron along with low pH and sometimes the health threats radon and arsenic in water.  If the testing results for radon exceed the current Massachusetts guideline of 10,000 pCi/L in water, the radon must be removed from the water and it is recommended testing the air for Radon as well.  It should be noted that New Hampshire requires action if radon is 2,000 pCi/L (pico curries per liter), Maine and Rhode Island are at 4,000 pCi/L.  The maximum allowable level of Arsenic in drinking water per the EPA is .01 mg/L (miligrams per liter) or 10 parts per billion. For more information on this see the link at Mass DEP Arsenic Info.

BAD ODORS & TASTES IN YOUR WATERfishy smell in water in Needham, MArotten egg smell in water in Needham, MAchlorine smell and taste in water in Needham, MA

There are various types of bad odors and tastes that you may experience in your water.  Hydrogen Sulfide is not uncommon and is evidenced typically by a rotten egg smell in your water, however this may also be caused by high Manganese levels as well.  A water filtration specifically for this problem is effective in correcting this. For a more complete description of this and other potential bad odors and taste in your water, see the link at http://h2ocare.com/bad-odor-taste-water/.

DISSOLVED COPPER FROM CORROSIVE LOW pH WATER

WATER SOFTENER & WATER FILTRATION SYSTEMS

Water Filtration and Water Softener systems can be installed in Middleton for the removal of any of the contaminants identified above and more .  Water softeners are typically installed to remove dissolved iron or manganese in the water through a technology called Ion Exchange, while particulate iron and manganese is removed with sediment filtration.  Arsenic is removed with tanks containing a specific media that “grabs” the arsenic out of the water (see photo below).  Removing radon from water requires a system where the water is agitated and contained, but then properly vented, sending the radon gas outside the home to ambient air (See photo below).  Other technologies and systems are used to remove the other contaminants.  Any water filtration or water softener system designed should start with a water test before an informed recommendation can be made.
