  WATER FILTRATION FOR LAWN IRRIGATION

PREVENTING UNSIGHTLY STAINING ON WALKWAYS, AUTOS AND SIDING

It is easy to recognize poor water quality inside your home, because you are in such close contact with the water you use. Bad tasting drinking water, dull laundry, bad odors or stained appliances will alert you to most water quality issues. Harder to pinpoint are the common water problems that plague the outside of New England homes. Stained walkways and siding could be attributed to other environmental factors, but the culprit is most often impure water with a high mineral content. These problems can easily be corrected with a water filtration system for lawn irrigation water.

REMOVAL OF STAINING MINERALS

Lawn irrigation with water that contains a high level of iron or manganese can leave brown, orange or reddish staining on walkways, patios, lawn furniture, automobiles or the sides of your home. One approach to this problem is to add mineral inhibiting chemicals to the water which will coat the iron and/or manganese molecules contained in the water, temporarily preventing staining. However, once the water evaporates from walkways and other horizontal surfaces, the iron/manganese is left behind and will stain wherever it lies. The only sure way to prevent this staining is to “remove” these staining minerals from your lawn irrigation is with water filtration for lawn irrigation.

INTEGRATION OF WATER FILTRATION FOR LAWN IRRIGATION

Image result for lawn irrigation system

A key factor in designing water filtration for lawn irrigation system is ensuring that there is no pressure loss or compromised water flow from the system. Consultation between the lawn irrigation professionals and water filtration professionals can avoid potential problems with the system. We will build and install a water filtration system that is custom-designed to work with your lawn’s existing lawn irrigation system. Equally important is getting an accurate water test to determine the level and type of contaminants in the water supply. (For more on this topic, see Water testing analysis)

Iron and Manganese are two commonly found minerals in New England, commonly referred to as “The Stainers”. Existing, tested technology and equipment is capable of effectively removing these minerals from the water and eliminating this problem. Both minerals can be found in particulate and dissolved form.  Cartridge filters can remove the particulates while dissolved forms need Ion Exchange, or water softening technology for effective removal.  Determining peak water flows and associated volume requirements are mandatory in designing a system that will work properly.

WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM OPTIONS

If you are reading this and you are a resident of North Hampton, NH, your home may have water which requires a water filtration system, water softener or a combination of filtration technologies.  As is the case with many wells in New England, there are certain common contaminants that find their way into the water supply.  North Hampton tends to have high levels of iron & manganese in the water along with low pH.  There are tried and true water filtration systems and water softener designs to remove these contaminants to provide you with excellent water quality.

Having your own well does give you control over your water supply more than if you were supplied by a public water supplier (and you don’t have to pay for the water), however, having your own well shifts all responsibility for the safety and quality of your water to you.

COMMON WATER QUALITY ISSUES

DISSOLVED IRON STAINING

Iron, manganese and hardness minerals, along with low pH tend to characterize many of the wells in North Hampton.  Due to these high levels, methods and technologies that may typically work on lower levels of iron and manganese may not be effective on these high levels.  See the Water Technology Magazine article titled, “Iron So High It Was Almost Frightening!” at the following link: Iron Article in Water Technology Magazine.  Hydrogen Sulfide is evidenced typically by a rotten egg smell in your water, however this may also be caused by high Manganese levels in the water as well.  Either an ozone, aeration or other media-based system can be effective in correcting this. Proper analysis will determine which approach makes the most sense.

WATER TESTING

Water testing should be conducted by an EPA or state certified laboratory and should include analysis for the parameters in the table below.  If you are uncertain as to how to take a proper sample and get it to a lab, you should contact a water treatment professional or lab for assistance.  They can walk you through the steps required to complete this task.  Typical items tested for include the following; however, you should discuss this with your water treatment professional of lab selected.

Coliform bacteria pH
Arsenic Radon
Chloride Sodium
Iron Sulfate
Lead Conductivity
Manganese Nitrogen-Nitrate

If the testing results for Radon exceed the current New Hampshire guideline of 2,000 pCi/L in water, the radon must be removed from the water and most Boards of Health recommend testing the air for Radon as well. If the results for Arsenic come in at or above .01 parts per billion, then a water filtration system for removing the Arsenic must be installed.

WATER FILTRATION SYSTEMS

Water filtration or water softener systems can be installed for the removal of any of the contaminants listed in the previous table and more.  Water softeners are typically installed to remove hard water minerals,  iron and manganese in the water through a technology called Ion Exchange.  For very high levels of iron or manganese, the design of the equipment installation is of particular importance.

Arsenic is removed with tanks containing a specific media that “grabs” the arsenic out of the water.  For more information on Arsenic in water, see the link at EPA Arsenic in water article.

Removing radon from water requires a system where the water is agitated to release the radon gas into a sealed chamber, then venting the radon gas safely outside the home to ambient air.  Other technologies and systems are used to remove the other contaminants.  Any water filtration system designed should start with a water test before an informed recommendation can be made.

               WATER FILTER SOLUTIONS

There are many types and sizes of filters available to address the various types of potential water quality issues experienced in Swansea town water or private wells. There are cartridge style water filters and whole house water filters which will be reviewed in the balance of this write-up.  Matching the right technology and sizing the system to meet the water usage demands of your home are critical to selecting the best approach for your situation.  Additionally, a professionally plumbed system is paramount as well as maintenance of the system throughout the years to optimize the useful life and proper functioning of your new water filtration equipment.

CARTRIDGE STYLE WATER FILTER

  WATER FILTER CARTRIDGE CHOICES

There are various types and sizes of water filter cartridges with differentiating features relating to what you are trying to mechanically remove from the water.  These filters do not work on removing dissolved impurities from the water as other technologies must be used for this purpose.

SEDIMENT WATER FILTER CARTRIDGE , as their name implies, are for removing sediment (particulate matter) from the water supply. The key characteristics relate to the micron rating of the filter designed to remove particles at or greater than a specified size and also capacity in terms of how long the sediment filter will work before it is no longer able to remove sediment. Specifying a micron rating that is too small for installation at the water’s point of entry into your home, for example, may cause an unacceptable drop in water pressure.  Specifying a micron rating that is not small enough may produce less than optimal results in keeping sediment out of your water supply.  Sometimes trial and error becomes the route to determining what works best in your situation. Experienced water treatment professionals have the benefit of many years of trial and error and will usually know what will work best in different situations.

SEDIMENT FILTERS ARE IMPORTANT because sediment can be abrasive to all of your water using appliances and can also negatively affect other types of water filtration or water softening equipment that you may have installed or are planning to install in your home or other facility. Removing sediment is also a good step in providing better drinking water, although not the only step if a higher level of purity is desired.  (For more on high quality drinking water, see the link at http://h2ocare.com/reverse-osmosis-ro-water-purification/.

CARBON WATER FILTER CARTRIDGES use activated carbon to remove chemicals (such as chlorine, volatile organics and others) and some bad tastes and odors from water.  Carbon filters are also components of reverse osmosis purification systems to remove chlorine from water prior to flowing to the systems’ membrane which can be negatively affected by the chlorine. Water passes through activated carbon, which is porous, trapping certain particles that are attracted to the porous material’s surface in a process known as adsorption.  At some point, adsorption capacity is exceeded and the filter must be changed in order to be effective.  As with sediment water filters, the micron rating and size of the filter must be matched to the specific situation.

There are also other types of water filter cartridges for very specific purposes such as pH neutralizing, pipe protection and others.  These may be introduced to you by your water treatment professional if your particular situation warrants.

WHOLE HOUSE WATER SOFTENING SYSTEMS

A water softener is a type of whole house water filtration system that is designed for removing hard water minerals (magnesium & calcium) as well as dissolved iron and manganese from the water.  For water with high levels of iron or manganese (“the stainers”), an “up-flow” water softener is recommended to prevent mineral build-up in the bottom of the water softener.  Also, high efficiency water softeners that are more efficient with both water and salt usage are preferred.

POINT OF ENTRY, WHOLE HOUSE CARBON OR SEDIMENT FILTERS

BACKWASHABLE CARBON OR SEDIMENT FILTER SYSTEM

In situations where there is high water usage and the use of cartridge filters doesn’t make sense, a point of entry system may be the solution.  These systems do not require the frequency of change-outs that cartridge filters do and have the ability to automatically clean themselves, extending the life of the media inside the tank.  Another example would be if your town supplied water is high in chlorine and you wish to eliminate it from your water supply, a point of entry carbon water filter will have enough capacity to last much longer and also remove more of the chlorine due to longer “contact time” that the water has with the filter.

BAD TASTES & ODORS, SEDIMENT

WHOLE HOUSE WATER FILTRATION SOLUTIONS

There are various types and sizes of whole house water filtration systems available to address potential water quality issues experienced in Swansea, Massachusetts town water or well water. Not only is matching the right technology important, but also sizing the system to meet the water usage demands of your home is very important. Additionally, a professionally plumbed system is also critical as well as maintenance of the system throughout the years to optimize the useful life and proper functioning of your new equipment which will process thousands of gallons of water per month.

While symptoms of water quality issues such as bad odors & taste, staining of laundry, bathroom fixtures, etc. are indicators of problems, the preferred starting point is to get a water test to identify the minerals or contaminants in the water and at what quantity they exist.  This will lead to an effective system recommendation and route to providing your home with excellent water quality.  While certain minerals & contaminants can be tested on-site (iron, hardness, pH, total dissolved solids, chlorine level), health threat items like radon in water, arsenic in water, nitrates and others should be properly sampled and brought to a certified laboratory for testing that requires specialized equipment.

BAD ODORS & TASTES IN YOUR WATERfishy smell in water in Swansea, MArotten egg smell in water Swansea, MAchlorine smell and taste in water Swansea, MA

There are various types of bad odors and tastes that you may experience in your water.  Hydrogen Sulfide is not uncommon and is evidenced typically by a rotten egg smell in your water, however this may also be caused by high Manganese levels as well.  A water filtration specifically for this problem is effective in correcting this. For a more complete description of this and other potential bad odors and taste in your water, see the link at http://h2ocare.com/bad-odor-taste-water/.

You may notice odor and taste issues if your home is supplied by town water, typically associated with Chlorine.  Chlorine is used for disinfection purposes by the town to control microorganisms including bacteria and others that may be present in the water distribution system.  Carbon water filtration systems are effective at removing chlorine and the associated taste and odors that come with it.  These systems can either be installed at the point of entry in your home, typically in the basement, or at a point of use for drinking water only.

WHOLE HOUSE WATER FILTRATION FOR REGIONAL HEALTH THREATS

Other contaminants found in New England well water include Radon and Arsenic.  A water softener will not remove these health threat contaminants. Radon in water is safely removed with an aeration system that agitates the incoming well water, releasing the gas from the water in a sealed chamber. This gas is then safely vented to the outside ambient air.
