Water Treatment and Filtration Systems

High Efficiency Water Softener

At H2O Care, we offer comprehensive testing to identify contaminants in your water. From there, our trained experts provide professional recommendations and top-notch installations for effective filtration.

There are many factors to consider when treating water quality issues.  Matching the right technology and properly sizing the system to meet estimated water usage demands are key.  Also, determining the best placement for installing the system is another consideration.

Identifying the contaminants in your water and choosing the right system helps address your water quality concerns. Proper treatment also reduces the risk of damage to your home’s plumbing distribution system and expensive, water-using appliances. It will also aid in removing minerals that create aesthetic problems. These include staining on fixtures and laundry, as well as scale buildup on fixtures, dishware and glassware.

Water supplied by municipal sources undergoes treatment before being sent to consumers. Although the water is normally safe, the town has limitations on the amount of treatment it can apply. The result can be poor taste, smell, or overall water quality. For well users, water testing and treatment are solely the owner’s responsibility.

At H2O Care, we have provided comprehensive water treatment services to customers for over 35 years. Contact us to schedule a service appointment and a free water test!

How We Identify What’s In Your Water

To select the right water filtration system, you have to identify what’s in your water. The first step is water testing. At H2O Care, we offer free on-site testing for certain common contaminants and broader laboratory testing for health threats for a fee. Upon analysis of the results, we can decide what type and size system you’ll need to effectively remove the contaminants from your water.

Types of Water Treatment

H2O Care offers a comprehensive range of household water treatment systems. Some of the systems we install include:

  • Point-of-use systems that treat water at a single point of use (like a single faucet).
  • Whole-house water treatment systems (point-of-entry systems) that treat all the water coming into the home
  • Outside water irrigation (sprinkler) filtration systems causing staining or other problems

Read more about some of the options and how they work below.

1. Water Filtration

Water filtration is the most common way to remove contaminants from your home water supply. There is mechanical filtration, typically performed with cartridge type filters to remove sediment or chlorine and other contaminants. Water softeners, backwashing water filter systems, ozone systems, and others can remove specific contaminants. Reverse osmosis systems will remove total dissolved solids (TDS) from drinking water. These systems will eliminate various contaminants, such as:

  • Hardness minerals
  • Iron
  • Manganese
  • Arsenic
  • Radon
  • Lead
  • PFAS
  • Sediment
  • Chlorine
  • Chemicals
  • Foul odors and tastes
  • And more

2. Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis (RO) is one method that purifies water using a semi-permeable membrane technology. It is the same technology used to desalinate seawater. It is typically considered the most effective and practical way to truly purify drinking water.

Water passes through pre-filters to remove sediment, chlorine, and other impurities. Then, it flows against the membrane to remove total dissolved solids. Finally, it goes through a post-carbon filter for finishing touches.

Reverse osmosis can remove:

  • Contamination from saltwater intrusion in private wells (this would be a whole-house RO system treating all incoming water)
  • Foul taste or odor
  • Turbidity (cloudiness or haziness in water)
  • Arsenic
  • PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)
  • THMs (Trihalomethanes)
  • Haloacetic acid
  • And much more

3. Water Softeners

Water softeners remove the minerals that cause water hardness (magnesium & calcium) through the ion exchange process. They are also very effective at removing dissolved iron and manganese.

Hard water can lead to limescale buildup, which can damage household appliances, fixtures, laundry, and dry out hair and skin. Iron and manganese similarly can cause staining and damage as well.

4. Activated Carbon Filtration

Activated carbon is used to adsorb certain contaminants.

Activated carbon can remove:

  • Volatile organic compounds (MTBE, Trichlorethylene, and many others)
  • Pesticides
  • Chlorine
  • Chloramine
  • Herbicides
  • Bad odors and taste
  • PFAS
  • THMs
  • Haloacetic acid
  • And more

5. Aeration

Aeration refers to the process of increasing the oxygen saturation in water. It also removes radon gas, volatile organic compounds and other contaminants, while potentially raising low ph. (see system photo at right)

Aeration can remove:

  • Hydrogen sulfide
  • Methane
  • Radon
  • Volatile organic compounds

6. Ozonation

Ozone (O3) is a gas that is a very powerful oxidizer, much more powerful than chlorine. It is an oxidizing agent that’s used to treat water by breaking down organic materials in bacteria, viruses, and parasites. This kills their cells, therefore eliminating them. Ozone also oxidizes dissolved metals into particulate matter that can be mechanically filtered out of the water. Additionally, it can remove odor issues and potentially taste issues.

We install a filtration tank that internally converts the oxygen in water (O2) into ozone (O3). The system injects the generated ozone into the water supply in a way that ensures proper mixing and effectiveness. It is a safe, clean, and powerful tool.

7. Acid Neutralization For Low pH

If your water is acidic, the best solution is a whole-house acid neutralizer. This system raises the pH level of acidic water to a more neutral level. Acidic water can cause damage to plumbing and fixtures (including pin-hole leaks), damage water-using appliances, and cause skin irritation, among other things.

A typical system would include a tank filled with calcite or similar media. As the water flows through the tank, it absorbs some of this media, thereby raising the pH level. For very low pH it is possible to add other stronger media to accomplish neutralization.  In some cases, aeration can bring the pH up sufficiently.

I’m very pleased with my softening and filtration equipment from H2O Care. In particular, Steven Theriault recommended a 5 micron whole house filter, which I had included with the softener package. Needless to say, after one year’s use, you can see clearly all the nasty crud that would have gone into our showers, laundry and cleaning. We are on Hamilton Town water and the water is nasty. Our filtered, softened water is wonderful. Bravo to Steven and H2O Care.

I had a really great experience with H2O care from start to finish. They listened to my requirements (instead of just trying to sell me the most expensive solution possible) and were extremely thorough in answering all my questions. Our installer was also FABULOUS! The install is incredibly clean and his care and craftsmanship with the piping really shows. It kind of makes our old existing piping seem sloppy by comparison. I would recommend H2O care again in a heartbeat.

I am just loving my new H2O care water system installed about a month ago. I live in Dracut MA and am on the Dracut Water District Supply system. The water has been terrible for some time now. The manganese in the water had stained everything from toilets and appliances to my new white sheets. That is history now!! I did a lot of research on water systems and Steve T was more than happy to take my many phone calls. Pricing was right considering the quality of the system as compared to other vendors’ products. Everything was perfect from sales and service to installation. I would highly recommend H2O Care Inc to anyone who cares about clean water.
