WATER SOFTENER

WATER SOFTENER FOR CARLISLE WELL WATER

Hard water contaminants, including iron and manganese found in well water supplying homes in Carlisle, MA can be removed with a water softener.  There are different types of water softeners, including up-flow versus down-flow which can make a big difference, particularly if there are elevated levels of iron or manganese in the water.  The main hard water minerals are magnesium and calcium.  While the EPA has no maximum levels set for calcium and magnesium, these minerals can have devastating affects on your home’s plumbing as well as your ability to clean.  Hard water interferes with almost every cleaning task, from doing the laundry to washing dishes to taking a shower. Clothes can look dingy and feel rough and scratchy. Dishes and glasses get spotted and a film may build up on shower doors, bathtubs, sinks and faucets. Washing your hair in hard water may leave it feeling sticky and dull. Finally, hard water can cause a residue to build-up in pipes that can lower water pressure throughout the house.

Also commonly found in Carlisle are iron and manganese (“The Stainers”). The EPA maximum allowable level for iron as a secondary contaminant is .3 parts per million.  The EPA maximum allowable level for manganese as a secondary contaminant is .05 parts per million.  Small amounts of these minerals can have immense affects on your home’s water quality.  A water softener will remove dissolved iron & manganese in the water.  Particulate iron & manganese can be removed with proper sediment filtration application.

AFFECTS OF IRON, MANGANESE & HARD WATER IN YOUR HOME

Some of the affects include corrosion and scaling inside pipes, major staining throughout the home’s showers, bathtubs, and sinks and destruction of hot water heaters way ahead of their useful life. Aside from some of the affects mentioned above, hard water scale can also build-up inside hot water heaters insulating the temperature sensor inside the tank causing them to work much harder to bring the temperature up to the set level.  Without water softening, this will reduce the useful life of your hot water heater and require early replacement.  Hydrogen Sulfide is evidenced typically by a rotten egg smell in your water, however this may also be caused by high Manganese levels in the water as well.  A water filtration specifically for this problem is effective in correcting this.  For those using their well water for outside lawn irrigation, iron and manganese can cause major staining of outside walkways, house siding and anyplace the water touches. See the link at http://h2ocare.com/lawn-irrigation/

WHAT WILL A WATER SOFTENER REMOVE?

A water softener is effective in removing dissolved forms of iron & manganese and hardness minerals in your Carlisle well water. To remove particulate iron or manganese, a cartridge filter with proper micron rating will be effective. Depending on the specific situation, this could require a series of filters with different size micron ratings to handle heavier levels in the water.  Selecting the appropriate micron rating and style of filter can be determined by a water treatment professional based on water test results and other symptoms. WHAT OTHER CONTAMINANTS FOUND IN CARLISLE, MA WILL A WATER SOFTENER NOT REMOVE?

Other contaminants found in Carlisle well water include Radon and Arsenic.  A water softener (water softening) will not remove these health threat contaminants. Radon is safely removed with an aeration system that agitates the incoming well water, releasing the gas from the water in a sealed chamber, then venting it safely to the outside ambient air.  Arsenic in water can be removed at the point of entry into the home with tanks filled with arsenic specific resin that captures the arsenic before it can get into the home’s water supply. Point of use systems for drinking water can use reverse osmosis technology to effectively remove arsenic. WILMINGTON PUBLIC WATER SUPPLY

Per the Wilmington Water and Sewer Department, the Wilmington Water Department provides drinking water to 99 percent of all the residents and businesses in Wilmington. The source of the water is groundwater, which is pumped from four wells located throughout Wilmington. From the wells, the source water is pumped to one of two water treatment plants. The water is then treated using filtration and disinfection to remove or reduce any harmful contaminants. From the treatment plants, the water is pumped to one of three storage tanks and to the homes and businesses throughout Wilmington. To provide the highest protection for the source water, Wilmington has established Zoning, Inhabitant and Board of Health bylaws, which include groundwater protection, floor drain regulations, and water use restrictions. In times of high demand, MWRA water is used to supplement the Town’s supply. Wilmington also maintains interconnections and agreements with North Reading, Burlington, and Woburn.  See the Annual Report at Wilmington Annual H2O Quality Report.  Page 5 of 6 has the most relevant information on the water supply.  For a chart identifying potential symptoms of water quality issues with solutions, see the link at: http://h2ocare.com/common-water-problems/.  These symptoms range from those that are visible to those that you can taste or smell.  Below are photos of symptoms of Iron and low pH in the water supply.

Water Filtration Systems and Water Softeners

Water filtration systems can be installed for the removal of any of the potential causes of symptoms you may be experiencing.  Water softeners are typically installed to remove hard water minerals (calcium and magnesium) as well as dissolved iron or manganese from the water through a technology called Ion Exchange.  To remove particulate iron or manganese, a properly sized sediment filter is required.  Chloramine can be removed with a carbon filtration system to remove bad taste and odor. Additionally, for the ultimate in drinking water quality, reverse osmosis technology is an extremely effective water purification system.  Hydrogen Sulfide is evidenced typically by a rotten egg smell in your water, however this may also be caused by high Manganese levels in the water as well.  A water filtration specifically for this problem is effective in correcting this.

Any water filtration system or water softener recommendation should start with a water test before an informed decision can be made.  To determine what type of water testing to have performed and how to take a proper sample, call a water treatment professional or a state certified laboratory.  Water softening is very effective in removing hard water minerals, iron and manganese.  Other contaminants will require different types of water filtration.

In summary, controlling your home’s water quality is attainable through proper water testing and equipment specification with today’s available water filtration technologies at a reasonable price.  Proper on-going maintenance is also critical to maintain a consistent level of great water quality.

PUBLIC WATER SUPPLY

The following information is taken from the Littleton, MA Water Department at http://www.lelwd.com/water-department/water-faqs/

Low doses of chlorine are added to the water at all well sites to ensure that the water delivered to your tap is free from bacteria and other potential disease-causing organisms. At times, you may notice an increased chlorine odor due to the disinfection of our water storage tanks. This is temporary and will typically fade over the course of a week or so.

  1. What does it mean when my water is discolored and what do I do to rectify it?   There could be many causes for discolored water.  Please contact the office at (978–540-2222) and we will assist you.
  2. How many times a year do we do flushing?   We do flushing two times during the year; spring and the fall.

PRIVATE WELL WATER

Private well owners in Littleton often inquire about water filtration systems or water softeners with regard to correcting low pH (corrosion)IronManganeseHard Water and High Total Dissolved Solids (TDS).  When water test results show low pH combined with High TDS, a properly designed water softener or filtration system can become more complicated.  In this case, a non-traditional, but effective approach may have to be taken to neutralize the low pH. Hydrogen Sulfide is evidenced typically by a rotten egg smell in your water, however this may also be caused by high Manganese levels in the water as well.  A water filtration specifically for this problem is effective in correcting this.  A water softener is effective in removing dissolved forms of iron, manganese and hard water minerals.  To remove particulate iron or manganese, a cartridge filter with proper micron rating will be effective.  Selecting the appropriate micron rating and style of filter can be determined by a water treatment professional based on water test results and other symptoms.  For more information on Iron and Manganese in water, see articles in Water Technology Magazine at the following link: http://h2ocare.com/publications/

TEST WATER BEFORE WATER SOFTENER OR WATER FILTRATION SPECIFICATION

As a home buyer or seller, there are always questions that come up regarding testing the water when a home is serviced by a private well.  If you are buying, have bought or are selling a home that has its own well water in Littleton, you will need to make sure it is tested.

Water testing should be conducted by an EPA or Massachusetts state certified laboratory and should include minimally, an analysis for the parameters in the table below.  If you are uncertain as to what to have tested and how to take a proper sample and get it to a lab, you should contact a lab or water treatment professional for assistance.   Typical items tested for are as follows:

Coliform bacteria pH
Arsenic Radon
Chloride Sodium
Iron Sulfate
Lead Conductivity
Manganese Nitrogen-Nitrate

If the testing results for Radon exceed the current Massachusetts guideline of ten thousand (10,000) pCi/L in water, then the radon must be removed from the water.  It is also recommended that testing the air for Radon is performed as well.  It should be noted that New Hampshire requires action if radon is 2,000 pCi/L (pico curries per liter).  Maine and Rhode Island have established limits of 4,000 pCi/L.  A water filtration system that will agitate and remove the radon gas by venting it outside will correct the radon in water issue.   If the results for Arsenic come in at or above .01 parts per billion, then a water filtration system for removing the Arsenic must be installed.  For more information on arsenic in water, see the Water Technology Magazine article at http://h2ocare.com/publications/ and clicking on the “Removing Arsenic The Right Way” article.

DAMAGING HARD WATER SCALE UNCHECKED

Water Softener & Filtration Systems

Water softener and filtration systems can be installed for the removal of any of the contaminants listed in the above table.  Water softeners are typically installed to remove hard water minerals, iron or manganese in the water through a technology called Ion Exchange.  Arsenic is removed with tanks containing a specific arsenic media that “grabs” the arsenic out of the water.  Removing radon gas from water requires a system which agitates the water in a sealed compartment, then vents it safely to the outside ambient air.  Other technologies and systems are used to remove the other contaminants.  The design and recommendation of any water softener or filtration system should start with a water test before an informed recommendation can be made.
