WATER FILTER FOR SOUTH HAMPTON, NH

There are many types and sizes of filters available to address the various types of potential water quality issues experienced in South Hampton town water or private wells. There are cartridge style water filters and self cleaning whole house water filters which will be reviewed in the balance of this write-up. Matching the right technology and sizing the system to meet the water usage demands of your home are critical to selecting the best approach for your situation. Additionally, a professionally plumbed system is paramount as well as maintenance of the system throughout the years to optimize the useful life and proper functioning of your new water filtration equipment.

WATER FILTERS CARTRIDGES

  CARTRIDGE WATER FILTER CHOICES

There are various types and sizes of water filter cartridges with differentiating features relating to what you are trying to mechanically remove from the water.  These filters do not work on removing dissolved impurities from the water as other technologies must be used for this purpose.

SEDIMENT WATER FILTER CARTRIDGE , as their name implies, are for removing sediment (particulate matter) from the water supply. The key characteristics relate to the micron rating of the filter designed to remove particles at or greater than a specified size and also capacity in terms of how long the sediment filter will work before it is no longer able to remove sediment. Specifying a micron rating that is too small for installation at the water’s point of entry into your home, for example, may cause an unacceptable drop in water pressure.  Specifying a micron rating that is not small enough may produce less than optimal results in keeping sediment out of your water supply.  Sometimes trial and error becomes the route to determining what works best in your situation. Experienced water treatment professionals have the benefit of many years of trial and error and will usually know what will work best in different situations.

SEDIMENT FILTERS ARE IMPORTANT because sediment can be abrasive to all of your water using appliances and can also negatively affect other types of water filtration or water softening equipment that you may have installed or are planning to install in your home or other facility. Removing sediment is also a good step in providing better drinking water, although not the only step if a higher level of purity is desired.  (For more on high quality drinking water, see the link at http://h2ocare.com/reverse-osmosis-ro-water-purification/.

CARBON WATER FILTER CARTRIDGES use activated carbon to remove chemicals (such as chlorine, volatile organics and others) and some bad tastes and odors from water.  Carbon filters are also components of reverse osmosis purification systems to remove chlorine from water prior to flowing to the systems’ membrane which can be negatively affected by the chlorine. Water passes through activated carbon, which is porous, trapping certain particles that are attracted to the porous material in a process known as adsorption.  At some point, adsorption capacity is exceeded and the filter must be changed in order to be effective.  As with sediment water filters, the micron rating and size of the filter must be matched to the specific situation.

There are also other types of water filter cartridges for very specific purposes such as pH neutralizing, pipe protection and others.  These may be introduced to you by your water treatment professional if your particular situation warrants.

A water softener is a type of whole house water filtration system that is designed for removing hard water minerals (magnesium & calcium) as well as dissolved iron and manganese from the water.  For water with high levels of iron or manganese (“the stainers”), an “up-flow” water softener is recommended to prevent mineral build-up in the bottom of the water softener.  Also, high efficiency water softeners that are more efficient with both water and salt usage are preferred.

In situations where there is high water usage and the use of cartridge filters doesn’t make sense, a point of entry system may be the solution.  These systems do not require the frequency of change-outs that cartridge filters do and have the ability to automatically clean themselves, extending the life of the media inside the tank.  Another example would be if your town supplied water is high in chlorine and you wish to eliminate it from your water supply, a point of entry carbon water filter will have enough capacity to last much longer and also remove more of the chlorine due to longer “contact time” that the water has with the filter.

BAD TASTES & ODORS, SEDIMENT

In addition to the above systems, there are many other types of systems to remove bad tastes & odors, sediment and many other objectionable minerals and contaminants in the water.  Starting with a water test will dictate the right approach.  For more information on common bad odors & tastes in New England water supplies, see the link at http://h2ocare.com/bad-odor-taste-water/.

WHOLE HOUSE WATER FILTER FOR TWO COMMON REGIONAL HEALTH THREATS IN PRIVATE WELLS

Other contaminants found in New England well water include Radon and Arsenic.  A water softener will not remove these health threat contaminants. Radon in water is safely removed with an aeration system that agitates the incoming well water, releasing the gas from the water in a sealed chamber. This gas is then safely vented to the outside ambient air. For more information on radon in water removal, see the link at http://h2ocare.com/radon-removal/

Arsenic in water can be removed at the point of entry into the home by installing tanks filled with arsenic specific resin that captures the arsenic before it can get into the home’s water supply.  Point of use systems for drinking water can use reverse osmosis technology to effectively remove arsenic as well.

WHOLE HOUSE WATER SOFTENING SYSTEMS

A water softener is a type of whole house water filtration system that is designed for removing hard water minerals (magnesium & calcium) as well as dissolved iron and manganese from the water.  For water with high levels of iron or manganese (“the stainers”), an “up-flow” water softener is recommended to prevent mineral build-up in the bottom of the water softener.  Also, high efficiency water softeners that are more efficient with both water and salt usage are preferred.

BACKWASHABLE CARBON OR SEDIMENT FILTER SYSTEM

In situations where there is high water usage and the use of cartridge filters doesn’t make sense, a point of entry system may be the solution.  These systems do not require the frequency of change-outs that cartridge filters do and have the ability to automatically clean themselves, extending the life of the media inside the tank.  Another example would be if your town supplied water is high in chlorine and you wish to eliminate it from your water supply, a point of entry carbon water filter will have enough capacity to last much longer and also remove more of the chlorine due to longer “contact time” that the water has with the filter.

HARD WATER/ IRON IN PORTSMOUTH IS NOT UNCOMMON

Food service water filtration Portsmouth,,NH

Water hardness refers to the mineral content of water, commonly calcium and magnesium. The only way to determine the hardness level in the water is to have it tested.  Water hardness will vary from town to town and depending on the water source.   Water hardness also may vary somewhat by seasons of the year. When using dishwashers, you may notice an increase in “spotting or streaking” on glassware, flatware or white residue in kitchenware.  This residue consists mainly of calcium carbonate, the same ingredient found in anti-acid products and not a known health risk, but an annoying aesthetic problem that makes for a bad presentation to customers. On-going hard water can also eventually have a negative impact on your water using appliances with potential premature breakdowns, etc. Additionally, some equipment manufacturers specify water quality parameters in their users manual which could render warranties unenforceable if not adhered to. A properly specified, installed and maintained Food Service water filtration system consisting of a water softener can immediately solve the issue of hard water.  Also, dissolved iron and manganese in the water is effectively removed with a water softener installation.

While symptoms of water quality issues such as bad odors & taste, staining of bathroom fixtures & laundry, premature equipment breakdowns etc. are indicators of problems, the preferred starting point is to get a water test to identify the minerals or contaminants in the water and at what quantity they exist.  This will lead to an effective Food Service water filtration system recommendation and route to providing excellent on-going water quality for drinking, washing, etc.  There are various approaches to providing your restaurant with better quality ice, good tasting water, improved beverage taste and improved water quality to feed your dishwashers to avoid streaking on glasses and dinnerware.

Various types of water filtration systems are available for the removal of any of the potential causes of symptoms you may be experiencing.  Water softeners are typically installed to remove hard water minerals, dissolved iron or manganese from the water through a technology called Ion Exchange.  To remove particulate iron or manganese, a properly sized sediment filter is required.  Bad tastes & odors, which may be the result of the chlorine or chloramine added into the water supply for disinfecting purposes, can be removed with a carbon filtration system.  Additionally, to create very pure drinking water, a reverse osmosis system can be installed, which utilizes the same technology used to produce both Aquafina, Dasani and some other bottled waters.  There are various sized reverse osmosis systems to match the volume demands required.

REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER PURIFICATION

Any water filtration system or water softener recommendation should start with a water test before an informed decision can be made.  To determine what type of water testing to have performed and how to take a proper sample, call a water treatment professional or a state certified laboratory.  Water softening is typically not required in Boston, however, sediment & carbon filtration is often recommended for overall water quality improvement.

In summary, controlling your water quality is attainable through proper water testing and equipment specification with today’s available water filtration technologies at a reasonable price.  Proper on-going maintenance is also critical to maintain a consistent level of great water quality.
